I've been reading an interesting book lately. Well, the concept is interesting--the book, eh. It's called "Not Buying It" and it's about a couple who decide to go a year without buying anything except the very basic necessities in an attempt to get away from the consumerism that runs rampant in our country. I told Ryan about this and his response was, "Don't we already do that?" Ha.
The book just makes you really think about what you really need. The author justifies her $50 haircut as a necessity, even though she works from home as a freelance author. That I don't get, but to each his own, right?
So I've been doing a mini experiment this week and I haven't been buying it. I haven't been driving anywhere (bikes and my feet and good weather have been helpful.) I haven't gone to the grocery store since March 16th, which is a big deal for me--I usually go every week. But I figured we've got enough food in our pantry/freezer/fridge and enough creativity in the kitchen to push it this week. It's been fun! And I just love the thought of all the money I'm saving by NOT spending! :)

I read that book after seeing an interview with an author when it came out. First of all, I think it's ironic that she is SELLING a book about not buying things. (which is why I got mine from the library). Second, the idea has some merit, but I was so completely put off by her snarky, liberal-elite attitude and the totally unnecessary political barbs sprinkled throughout the book, that it was hard for me to appreciate her message.
