Traffic wasn't ideal so it took us longer to get there than we anticipated, but we had a nice dinner at our site and plenty of time to explore and set up camp. There was a ranger-led campfire program that night after dinner. I took the kids to hear some fun tall tales and Colorado legends while Ryan tended the campfire. In the middle of the program Chloe looked down at her stuffed dog and thought there was a giant spider on it so she screamed and threw it across the amphitheater. The ranger came over to investigate and found it was just a large fuzzy piece of lint. Kind of embarrassing, but really funny...
We had s'mores (of course) and by then Lincoln was DONE. He was so exhausted that the fact that his fingers were sticky was pushing him completely over the edge. I put him to bed and then the rest of us stayed up and had a lot of fun just talking. When it finally got dark enough we tried out Isaac's new telescope and then hit the sack.

In the morning we got an early start and headed out for a 4 1/2 mile hike. Our destination was an old homesteaders cabin. Some of the children (Chloe) were very unhappy and cranky as we got close to the end. We bet the kids they couldn't make it to the cabin by 10:00. At 9:58 we decided to start running. Chloe was throwing a fit--whining and crying about how she didn't want to run, she was too tired, etc., etc. Then she saw the roof of the cabin in the distance and suddenly she took off running, as happy as a clam. All in all it was a good hike.
The kids wanted us to do silly faces every time we posed for a picture...
Um, I can totally tell why the homesteader built his cabin here. It was so beautiful! The cabin is at the left of this picture-- falling down. If it wasn't protected state land I would try to buy it. :)
On our way back to civilization, we just had to stop by Buffalo Bill's gravesite on Lookout Mountain (after Isaac did that huge research project on him last year it was not optional!) The view was incredible and the gravesite was...a gravesite.
Great weekend--too short in many ways, although we are still paying for letting the kids stay up so late. :(

Sounds fun! It is very pretty up there in golden gate. Marks mom and pop live literally 5 minutes from those campgrounds and that is where his mom actually works! Maybe she helped you check in and didn't even know it!
